This is my submission for the 2024 Penguin Book Cover Awards and speaks to Daisy Jones's free spirit, the conflicts between her musical talent and her drug abuse. These are explored through the pill bottle she carries, the concert stage where she finds acceptance and the moment of peace she feels while high and she jumps into a swimming pool while wearing an iconic Kaftan dress.
Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne are two sides of the same coin. Driven, musically talented and both scarred by families that didn't love them. Both find salvation in the 1970s music scene and the alcohol and drugs that went along with it.
Although the project was not shotlisted, it helped me see where I had overlooked a brief. Penguin wanted something to reflect the fun 70s feeling within the book. However, I was distracted by the more adult themes, and while I think my outcome could serve that audience, I reflected afterwards on how I did not align with the brief closely enough on this occasion.
Daisy Jones in her pill bottle and reflecting her moment in the seminal moment in the swimming pool while high. This is contrasted against the place she find love and acceptance, the stage.
